Talk: Women from Shoreditch and Hoxton
Sue Doe, part of the team which created the book ‘Women from Hackney’s History‘ and the film ‘Women of Abney‘, will concentrate on those women connected to Shoreditch and Hoxton; both those who feature in the book ‘Women from Hackney’s History‘ and those that have been rediscovered since.
This event at The Courtyard Theatre, Bowling Green Walk, 40 Pitfield Street, N1, runs from 6.30pm-7.30pm on Tuesday 12 September, including Q&A after the talk. There will be a licensed bar open from 5.30pm.
From the early myths about Shoreditch’s name, the talk will cover the nuns of Holywell and the aristocratic family who moved in, Elizabethan writers, actresses, suffragettes, the Queen of the Shoplifters, the mother and daughter team behind some very famous furniture, the local politicians and early social workers who made such a difference to local people’s lives, the women who ran Hoxton Hall and it’s adjoining hostel, a magician, successful businesswomen, aeronauts and a potential link to the Gunpowder Plot.
