Tuesday 25th February at 6.30pm at Hackney Archives
Community, protest and media activism at the Rio in the 1980s! Remembering the Tape/Slide Newsreel group and women’s screening practices.
Join Andrew Woodyatt and Selina Robertson for a collaborative, illustrated talk on the Rio’s cultural, social and political histories of the 1980s. Andrew will speak about the Rio’s Tape/Slide Newsreel group, a community photography project for unemployed Hackney residents set up by Sandra Hooper, a local teacher and photographer, in 1982. Selina will share her research on the women’s film and video programming and media activism that coalesced at the Rio: feminist collective cultural work that took inspiration from women’s liberation organising and actions specifically in Hackney.
