Friends of Hackney Archives Visit to St Andrews, Bethune Road, N16 – Sat. 28th June
‘A high Victorian gem’
St Andrews is a treasure house of late Victorian church decoration. In a coherent set of murals, the artist, Alexander Higerty, depicts events in the life of Christ using a restrained range of colours set against bold red backgrounds and landscapes reminiscent of north Italian renaissance scenery. The Baptistry with its alabaster font is particularly rich. The windows are of several dates: Victorian windows are in the nave; the impressive west window is a memorial to the dead of the Great War; the east window, destroyed by a bomb blast in 1944, now boasts an impressive depiction from 1951 of Christ in majesty by the Scottish artist William Wilson.
The Speaker
Donna McDonald is a writer and project manager. In 2013, she was asked to collaborate with architect Jon Bolter in the renewal of the roofs at St Andrews and the restoration of the two great west and east windows. In the course of this work, she also researched the murals at the church and arranged for the restoration of some of them. Her booklet on the murals and stained glass is available for sale at the church.
Date and Time – Saturday 28th June at 3 p.m.
St Andrews is on the junction of Bethune Road and Dunsmure Road. The talk will take place in the church itself at 3 p.m. Doors will open at 2.30 – giving time beforehand to admire the walls and windows. Donna has written an article on the murals in the Terrier 118.
Booking will be via the HackneyHistoryEventbrite page
