Hackney Archives hold close to 2,500 digital copies of old photos and drawings of Stoke Newington. Amir Dotan, the man behind the popular twitter feed @HistoryOfStokey, was given special permission by the Hackney Archives a few years ago to present a sample of photos and drawings illustrating the history of Stoke Newington over the centuries. In this talk Amir will take us on a visual tour of Stoke Newington’s past to a time when the New River ran along Church Street and detached mansions were a common sight. It’ll also show how slum clearance and road widening in the 1930s had a considerable impact on Stoke Newington’s streetscape.

Amir Dotan has been researching and sharing the history of Stoke Newington as a hobby since 2013 and shares his findings on TwitterInstagram and Facebook. In 2016 he started the highly popular quarterly event ‘Stoke Newington History Talks‘.

Originally from Israel and a keen history buff from a young age, Amir moved to London in 2001 to study web design. He has been living in Stoke Newington since 2002.

Hackney Archives has a wealth of visual and other material about 600 years of Hackney’s history which can be explored here at Hackney Archives catalogue
