Join Sean Gubbins from Hackney History for an introduction to the history of Hackney

Online Talk + Q&A Wed. 25 August 2021 19:00 – 20:00 BST

About this event

This is very much an introduction to the history of today’s Hackney. It would suit you if you know little about Hackney’s History, or if you know parts and would like to fill in the gaps.

The talk will cover:

  • The different areas that make up modern Hackney, ie. the former parishes and then boroughs of Hackney, Stoke Newington and Shoreditch.
  • An overview of how these areas developed into today’s London suburb.
  • What distinguishes the different areas, and the themes that can be found running through their history.

The talk will last 50 minutes with 10 minutes at the end for Q&A.

The talk is by Hackney History (Friends of Hackney Archives) and is free to Hackney History members and non-members alike. It will be given by Sean Gubbins, a member of Hackney History, who has been building up his knowledge of Hackney’s history researching, devising and leading history walks all over today’s Hackney.

It is hoped that this talk will be followed in the autumn with a 9-week series of talks chronologically going through the history of Hackney, from pre-Stone Age to today.
